Does Chiropractic Care Help Your Immune System?

March 25, 2020

Sometimes, especially right now, we can’t avoid being sick.

No matter what we do, sometimes we still come down with whatever we’re trying to avoid.

Among other things, our lifestyle plays a massive role in whether or not we stay healthy consistently.

It can be tough to bring the right nutrients into your daily eating regime, especially during uncertain times, to assure you are boosting your immune system.

Our immune system is a vital part of us staying healthy, as well as our body being able to function to its potential.

We all know chiropractic care is great for things like back and neck pain. But, can it give your immune system a boost?

We’ll examine that question in the article below.

What Does Our Immune System Do?

The primary role of our immune system is to protect and fight against infectious organisms, and to keep them from entering our bodies.

Our immune system is made up of proteins, tissues, organs, and cells that work together to keep us healthy.

Immune System Problems

While our bodies are protected by our immune system, some things could happen that cause it to not work correctly.

A few reasons why your immune system may not work properly may include:

  • Autoimmune disorders where the immune system attacks itself because it sees itself as dangerous
  • Cancer
  • Immunodeficiency disorder
  • Allergic Disorder where the immune system gives an overreacting response to a particular allergen

Treatment for Immune System Problems

There are several treatments available for those suffering from a failed immune system.

If you suffer from any of the disorders listed above, some medications may be available to aid in the various symptoms associated with the disorders.

There is also an alternative form of treatment for people looking for a non-invasive and natural way to treat their immune system.

Chiropractic Treatment

As we mentioned above, many people associate chiropractic treatment with neck or back pain.

But everyone should know that more benefits come with chiropractic care than that.

Chiropractic care aids in the overall health of patients.

Although adjustments of the spine do help in relieving back and neck discomfort, these adjustments also aide our immune system.

Our immune system is directly connected to our spine, and when our spine is not aligned, it may throw your entire system off track.

This often results in a non-responsive system.

One of the leading causes of immune system problems comes from subluxations.

Chiropractors may use a variety of spinal manipulation to help relieve this compression, which in turn may boost your immune system.

Studies Showing Chiropractic Boosting the Immune System

One of the most important studies was performed by Dr. Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute.

His study showed the positive effect that chiropractic care can have on the immune system and general health.

Dr. Pero measured the immune systems of people under chiropractic care and compared it to those in the general population as well as those with cancer and other serious diseases.

His initial three-year study was of 107 individuals who had been under chiropractic care for five years or more.

Astonishingly, the chiropractic patients were found to have a 200% greater immune competence than those people who had not received chiropractic care.

They also had a 400% greater immune competence than those people with cancer and other serious diseases.

Also, the immune system superiority of those under chiropractic care did not appear to diminish with age.

Can chiropractic care help your immune system?

Dr. Pero noted that when applied in a clinical framework, he had never seen a group other than this chiropractic group to experience a 200% increase over the normal patients.

This is why he deemed chiropractic care so dramatically important.

Another study, performed by Patricia Brennan, PH.D., found improved immune response in her test subjects following chiropractic treatment.

Life Chiropractic University produced an incredible study from the Sid Williams Research Center in 1994.

The researchers in that study took a group of HIV positive patients and adjusted them over six months.

They found that patients that were adjusted had a forty-eight percent increase in the number of CD4 cells (an important immune system component).

The measurements were taken at the patients’ independent medical center, where they were under medical supervision for the condition.

The control group did not demonstrate this dramatic increase in immune function and actually experienced a 7.69% decrease in CD4 cell counts over the same period.

The immune system is affected by the nervous system through the connections with the endocrine and the autonomic nervous system.

It has been proven that chiropractic care improves the function of the nerve system through improving the movement of the spinal bones that encase and protect the spinal cord.
